Advice & Inspiration:
1. Monitor Streaming & Theatrical Releases: Keep track of what’s trending on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and HBO Max. Check box office numbers and streaming top 10 lists to see what audiences are watching. Follow pilot season news (spring is prime time for TV pilots) to know what new shows are developing.
2. Stay Active in Actor Communities: Join Facebook groups, Discord servers and Reddit communities focused on acting and the entertainment industry. Participate in local or virtual table reads, workshops, and meetups.
3. Track Emerging Technologies: Follow trends in AI casting, virtual production and self-tape innovations. Some studios and casting directors now use AI to analyze self tapes and match actors to roles based on facial recognition, voice analysis and movement patterns. Experiment with AI-driven apps such as RAFY, the self tape audition partner.
4. Virtual production (VP) is revolutionizing film and TV, allowing actors to perform against LED walls instead of green screens. Follow studios leading the way: ILM’s Stagecraft (The Mandalorian), Virtual Production Studios like XR Stage and Epic Games’ Unreal Engine power VP advancements. For even more hand-rubbing anticipation, perhaps you want to attend Unreal Fest 2025!
5. Embrace Improvisation: Challenge yourself by attending an improv workshop to enhance spontaneity and adaptability in your performances. Read this quick piece from Tina Fey’s Rules of Improvisation That Will Change Your Life, then grab her book Bossypants to learn even more.
6. Monologue Mastery: Time to throw out those stale monologues and bring some fresh ones to the table. Click on your choice(s) for some great options: Monologues for Women, Monologues for Men, Monologues for Teens, Monologues for Kids & Tweens.
7. Scene Study Session: Partner with fellow actors to analyze and perform scenes This will help deepen your understanding of character dynamics. Plus it’s a great way to make new friends! Ask your actor-mates to each bring someone to join your group!
8. Scriptwriting Exploration: Try your hand at writing a short scene or monologue to understand storytelling from a writer’s perspective. Start by defining the character’s objective and emotional state. Check out how to Build Better Characters.
9. Read an Actor’s Autobiography or Biography: There are so many delicious stories out there about actors’ journeys. Here are some books to start with: Lana Turner, Brooke Shields, Heath Ledger, Dorothy Stratten and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
10. Develop a Unique Character and Act it Out in Daily Life: This could be a LOT of fun. Imagine leaning out your apartment window and acting like the character Benita Butrell from In Living Color. Or how about similarly going to the mall to Ruby Rhod’s character in The Fifth Element? That said, the best character to be is one that you create. Bring it outside of the home and take note of the reactions people have, as they think you’re that person.
11. Practice Reacting Instead of Acting: Watch a scene on mute and mimic expressions. Choose some of your favorite scenes, then choose some unfamiliar scenes.
12. This month’s social media spotlight goes to Charley Crockett! Crockett is a neo-traditionalist country singer-songwriter-guitarist who blends old-school country with R&B, blues, jazz, Texas swing and Tejano influences. He recently headlined at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Check out his latest song Night Rider.
